Sophie von Bechtolsheim commemorates resistance and remembrance in Lichtenfels

November 9, 2026 is a very special day for Lichtenfels, as historian and artist Sophie von Bechtolsheim will come to the city for the memorial event. With a keen ear for the stories of the past, she speaks not only about her own family history, but also about the terrible Nazi atrocities and the importance of remembering. At the invitation of “Lichtenfels ist bunt” she shows that keeping memories of these dark times alive is essential in order to prevent such tragedies from happening again. The event is seen as a great recognition of the work of the action alliance, which promotes diversity and respectful coexistence and draws attention to the dangers of forgetting.

Sophie von Bechtolsheim, who comes from Upper Bavaria, is the granddaughter of Klaus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg. He is known for his failed bomb attack on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944, which was part of Operation Valkyrie. The plan aims to arrest the Nazi leadership after Hitler's death. However, the explosion of Stauffenberg's bomb at the Führer's Wolfschanze headquarters was not as devastating as desired, and the dictator survived.

A look back – Stauffenberg’s resistance

Claus von Stauffenberg, born November 15, 1907, was a German officer who played a central role in the resistance against National Socialism. After being seriously wounded in World War II, he lost an eye and a hand, which prevented him from taking a leadership role in the war. After his recovery, he joined the resistance in the Wehrmacht. The failed assassination attempt put him and many of his co-conspirators in great danger: Stauffenberg was executed on July 21, 1944 in the Bendlerblock in Berlin.

For many, Stauffenberg is a symbolic figure of resistance against the National Socialist regime and is remembered today in many political and military contexts in Germany. His courage and determination reflect a deep sense of duty and moral responsibility that calls people to stand up for justice and humanity. In the repression following the failed assassination attempt, over 200 conspirators were arrested and many were executed.

Memory remains important

The relevance of Stauffenberg's story and that of the resistance fighters must not be forgotten. The fact that such an important person like Sophie von Bechtolsheim and the action alliance “Lichtenfels is colorful” are holding on to such a commemoration shows the importance of coming to terms with the past. Especially in times when extremism and intolerance are on the rise again, it is essential that we learn from history and actively take a stand against injustice.

In addition to her personal family tradition, Sophie von Bechtolsheim also brings with her valuable lessons for today. Their commitment and tireless commitment to remembering and togetherness are needed more than ever. So let’s not remain silent spectators, but let’s actively work towards a colorful and diverse future.
