Serious accident: 76-year-old cyclist seriously injured in Kitzingen

A tragic accident occurred on Friday afternoon, July 18, 2025, in the Kitzingen district. A 76-year-old cyclist got into a collision with a car on the outskirts of town after ignoring the vehicle's right of way. This incident highlights the dangers that exist for cyclists on country roads and represents a serious problem that repeatedly leads to serious injuries and deaths not only in Kitzingen, but also throughout Germany.

The collision happened just after 10 a.m. when police were informed about the accident. The cyclist suffered serious injuries in the impact and had to be immediately taken to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, the 58-year-old driver and his passenger were uninjured. The police, volunteer fire brigade and emergency services were quickly on site to provide first aid to the injured cyclist, while the scene of the accident was closed to traffic. An accident investigation was launched and an expert was called in to clarify what happened. InFranken reports that…

The dangers for cyclists

This incident is not an isolated case. According to a study by insurers' accident research (UDV), serious bicycle accidents on country roads have increased by almost 30 percent in the last ten years. On average, four cyclists are killed and 58 are seriously injured every week. Intersections in particular are identified as hotspots for serious accidents: 68 percent of serious bicycle accidents occur in such places. What is particularly alarming is the fact that in 41 percent of cases cyclists collide with cars, with drivers usually being the main culprits. UDV has discovered that...

The most common causes of accidents are often a lack of visibility and the lack of separation between bicycle and car traffic, especially when speeds exceed 50 km/h. This means that cyclists are often overlooked, which can have fatal consequences. There are also a lack of safe cycle paths, and visibility obstacles at intersections contribute to the danger. The UDV therefore urgently calls for the creation of safe crossings and the elimination of visibility problems in critical places. Cyclists should also make sure to wear eye-catching, reflective clothing and use their lights to be better seen.

A healthy debate

There is a great deal of responsibility on the shoulders of road users, and drivers in particular should pay close attention to cyclists when visibility is limited. Especially on country roads, where cyclists are often in danger, everyone should just be a little more careful. It is also recommended that cyclists avoid busy roads where possible. The UDV study shows that 32 percent of serious accidents occur in areas where cycle paths could both increase safety and reduce pressure on road traffic.

The recent events in Kitzingen should wake us all up and fuel the discussion about the safety of cyclists on the road. A future-proof transport concept is urgently needed to prevent further accidents of this kind and to make cycling safe in rural areas too.
