FC Ingolstadt: Worries and hopes before the Toto Cup against Regensburg!
FC Ingolstadt is in the middle of an exciting and challenging season in the 3rd league. Managing director Dietmar Beiersdorfer emphasizes that despite a reduced budget, the club's ambitions remain unbroken. They want to shake up the league with a new mindset. Coach Sabrina Wittmann and her team do everything they can to develop the players and bring the team into shape.
Currently, FC Ingolstadt seems to be in a dangerous situation in the table: after a third of the season, they are in 15th place with 17 points. Although that doesn't sound catastrophic at first glance, Erzgebirge Aue is only one point behind them and in the first relegation zone. The next important game is already around the corner. On Friday at 6:30 p.m. the Ingolstadt team will meet SSV Jahn Regensburg in the Toto Cup quarter-finals.
Offensive challenges
FC Ingolstadt's offensive record is quite interesting: with 24 goals, they share sixth place in the league, but converting chances remains a major problem. The lack of goal getters is particularly noticeable. The newcomers have only scored two goals so far, which makes the situation even more difficult. The team's top scorer, Marcel Costly, has four goals and five assists, but the pressure on the offensive is enormous. The loan player Yann Sturm from SC Freiburg II could also come into play as a joker in this situation.
Wittmann, on the other hand, changed the system from 4-2-2-2 to 4-1-4-1 to bring a breath of fresh air into the game. This could potentially help make the offensive even more effective. Despite the challenges, the trainer seems to be well on track, as she is currently completing a DFB course to obtain a pro license. The final exams are now coming up and it remains to be seen what new ideas she will bring with her in the coming period.
Squad breadth and long-term challenges
Another problem that those responsible have to keep in mind is the limited squad width. Long-term failures could prove to be a serious obstacle for FC Ingolstadt. Despite the not significantly worse record compared to the previous year, when 20 points were achieved, the team has been prone to fluctuations since the start of the season. Due to the constant demands in the league, it is not easy to get consistency into the game.
Nevertheless, the confidence in the team is noticeable. “Having a good hand” is exactly what those responsible for FC Ingolstadt hope for in order to defy these challenges and ensure relegation. The next few weeks could be crucial for the season and the entire fan base is looking forward to the upcoming games.
