E-scooters and alcohol: 1.5 per mille in Ingolstadt - Now the penalty is imminent!

There was a lot of excitement in Ingolstadt on the evening of June 13, 2025, when a 43-year-old man was checked by the police on his e-scooter. The check took place at around 8:20 p.m. on Regensburger Straße. The driver caught the attention of the officers with his shaky course. An alcohol test then brought a surprise: almost 1.5 per mille was found. This makes the matter serious for the man, as he is threatened with criminal charges for drunk driving.

The police make it clear that the same rules apply to e-scooters as to cars - there's something there! A value of 0.5 per mille or more results in a hefty fine of 500 euros as well as two points in the traffic offenders' file and the one-month driving ban is also not to be scoffed at. Things get really tricky from 1.1 per mille, because then you are under criminal law, which can result in a possible revocation of your driving license. It is also noteworthy that a crime occurs at just 0.3 per mille with symptoms of failure.

Strict alcohol limits

E-scooters are still relatively new on the roads in Germany and the regulations are clear. The alcohol limits that apply to cars are also reflected in the use of e-scooters. For drivers under the age of 21 and for novice drivers in their probationary period, there is even an absolute alcohol ban - 0.0 per mille! This regulation is intended to avoid accidents and dangerous situations.

But what about the fines? The table for the different alcohol levels is clear:

Blood alcohol level fine Points Driving ban
0.0 250€ 1
0.5 500€ 2 1 month
0.3 (with failure symptoms) criminal proceedings 3 6-9 months
1.1+ criminal proceedings 3 6-9 months
1.6+ MPU arranged

But the regulations are not limited to harsh punishments. Anyone who rides as a pillion passenger on an e-scooter can also be held responsible, which makes riding with two people tricky if it comes to an inspection.

Legal situation and insurance

Another important point is that in the event of an accident, liability insurance covers third-party damage, while the driver himself has to pay for his own damage. This makes it even more important to drive responsibly and follow the rules.

The example of the 43-year-old man shows that a serious situation can quickly arise when alcohol is involved. His behavior could not only cost him his driver's license, but also have significant financial consequences. E-scooter drivers should always remember: drinking and driving – that doesn’t work!
