500 years of the Peasants' War: Ebern celebrates with gripping lectures!

In Swabia and Franconia, an important chapter of history will be celebrated in 2025: the 500th anniversary of the German Peasants' War. An event that has very personal stories for many. Exciting events recently took place, particularly in the Haßberge district, that drew attention to this eventful era.

The “Haßberge Historical Association” organized a well-attended series of lectures in the vaulted cellar of the Haßfurt district office, which was part of the “Day of the Franconians” program on July 6, 2025. In order to demonstrate the keen interest in regional history, additional chairs had to be provided. Speakers such as Thomas Schindler, Christoph Winkler, Michael Klug and Christiane Tangermann illuminated different aspects of the Peasants' War through personal fates and historical facts. In his lecture “Three Haßfurt Peasant War Fates – Poetry and Truth,” Schindler presented the lives of some well-known people, while Winkler discussed the episcopal castle Schmachtenberg and its destruction. Klug's digitally researched discovery of 20 Ebern insurgent leaders accompanied Tangermann's stories about the different perspectives on the Peasants' War in Ebern.

A living legacy

The lectures not only showed how powerful the Peasants' War was as a political and social upheaval, but also how closely it was linked to individual fates. The times of turmoil in the Würzburg official towns of Ebern and Haßfurt were brought to life in a vivid way. Another interesting point is that the “Haßberge District Historical Association” is planning a “summer trip” in August to the ruins of Zabelstein Castle, which was taken without a fight in 1525. This shows that dealing with history does not only take place in the form of lectures, but also through tangible historical context.

For anyone who would like to find out more about the background, further events are already being planned as part of the anniversary. A special exhibition entitled "Peasants at the Walls. The Resident City of Schleusingen in the Peasants' War of 1525" will be on display in Schleusingen from May 3rd to November 9th, 2025, while a traveling exhibition in the Wolfram von Eschenbach Museum will run from November 29th, 2024 to February 28th, 2025. The region will always remind us of what happened here 500 years ago.

A look into the future

The anniversary is celebrated not only in Haßfurt, but throughout Franconia with all sorts of events such as guided tours, theater performances and lectures. An outstanding event will be the memorial weekend on May 17th and 18th, which will feature ceremonies, monument unveilings and markets. The Thuringian state exhibition “Freiheyt 1525” in Mühlhausen and Bad Frankenhausen will also pay close attention to this time and promises that the memory of the Peasants' War and its effects will be maintained beyond this special period of the year.

Against this background, it becomes clear how relevant the processing and understanding of the past is for the present and the identity of the region. A journey through history is always a journey of discovery, and the events surrounding the Peasants' War invite everyone to become part of this living heritage.
