Sun protection in focus: New signs warn of increasing UV danger!

When the warm sun shines from the sky, we are drawn outside. But do we also know how to properly protect ourselves? The AOK Günzburg Directorate has now launched a practical initiative to educate the population about the dangers of UV radiation. As the Augsburger Allgemeine reports, special UV index boards have recently been set up in places where the risk of sunburn is particularly high. These panels are intended to display the UV index (UVI), which indicates the expected daily peak value of UV radiation.

The director of AOK Günzburg, Bernd Mayer, emphasizes the need to educate people about sun protection in connection with climate change. Because too much UV radiation can not only be painful, but also poses health risks. The skin and eyes in particular suffer from excessive sun exposure, which can increase the risk of skin cancer.

Recognize the risk of sunburn

But how does the UV index actually work? It shows how strong the UV radiation is on a particular day and helps us plan the necessary sun protection. If UVI values are high, it is advisable to use clothing and shade in addition to sunscreen. Because shade can reduce UV exposure by at least half, especially when we are under trees or bushes.

The team behind these panels consists of the Dermatological Prevention Working Group (ADP) and the German Cancer Aid. Thanks to the support of District Administrator Hans Reichhart and the office managers of the Plus Günzburg Health Region, education about sun exposure and the right protective measures will be promoted in the future.

Long-term health in focus

The health consequences of UV radiation should not be underestimated. As on the website of the DGUV Experience has shown that even moderate UV exposure can lead to serious long-term illnesses, including skin cancer. Since 2015 in particular, squamous cell carcinoma has been recognized as an occupational disease due to natural UV radiation. This highlights how important it is to take preventive measures.

A particularly worrying trend is the increasing frequency of skin cancer: the rate has doubled since 2000, and as global warming continues, UV exposure is also increasing. Employers are therefore required to ensure the protection of employees who work outdoors - around seven million people in Germany.

Overall, it is crucial to keep an eye on UV levels and dress accordingly. Dark, tightly woven and unbleached clothing offers the best protection, and wide hats and sunglasses are anything but negligible when it comes to eye protection.

Regardless of whether we are barbecuing in the garden or doing sports outdoors - knowing the right sun protection can help us avoid damage to our health and enjoy the beautiful days outdoors without any worries.
