Record jump! Stephan Embacher inspires in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

On January 1st, 2026, Stephan Embacher, who is just 19 years old and jumps for Kitzbüheler SC, set a new hill record at the New Year's jump in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. With an impressive 145.5 meters, he beat the previous record set by Michael Hayböck in 2025 with 145 meters. The conditions on New Year's Day were perfect, which was confirmed by ski jump manager Thomas Scheck. In front of around 22,000 enthusiastic spectators, Embacher also showed the best jump in the final, landing at 141.5 meters. It is not the first record-breaking event in Garmisch-Partenkirchen; Fans have already seen success from jumpers like Marius Lindvik and Dawid Kubacki in recent years.

The Four Hills Tournament started recently and is taking place for the 74th time this season. The start took place on December 29, 2025 in Oberstdorf, followed by the New Year's competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The next competition will take place on January 4th in Innsbruck, where Hayböck currently holds the record. Despite his excellent performances, Karl Geiger is not at the start this year as he was eliminated from the race with only 106.5 meters in the qualification.

Results and favorites of the tour

The first two jumps of this season have already delivered some interesting results. The performance of Domen Prevc (Slovenia) is particularly outstanding, as he took first place in the first competition in Oberstdorf and in the New Year competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Here is an overview of the results:

Place sprinter Points
1 Domen Prevc (Slovenia) 619.8
2 Jan Hörl (Austria) 584.8
3 Stephan Embacher (Austria) 578.3

The favorites for the overall ranking are clear: Domen Prevc, Ryoyu Kobayashi (Japan) and defending champion Daniel Tschofenig (Austria). Tschofenig dominated last season and is back in the game again this year. If he wants to win the Golden Eagle and the prize money of 100,000 euros, he will have to prevail against strong competition.

The tour is a highlight not only for the athletes but also for the spectators. In addition to exciting competitions, the results will be broadcast live on television, including on ARD, ZDF and Eurosport. This means everyone can experience the exciting jumps up close. The fans are looking forward to the next stops: Innsbruck and Bischofshofen, where fame and honor will once again be fought over.

Finally, it should be mentioned that the last German overall winner of the Four Hills Tournament was Sven Hannawald 24 years ago. It remains to be seen whether a German jumper can finish at the top again this season. Embacher's performances definitely show that the potential is there.
