Garmisch-Partenkirchen honors Laura Dahlmeier: Fast memorial in the spa gardens
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is currently mourning the late biathlete Laura Dahlmeier. A temporary memorial in the Partenkirchen spa park was spontaneously erected to give her memory a worthy place. The memorial, which consists of a photo in an iron frame, a wildflower arrangement and candles, and a large local stone with a small plaque, was created in just two days with the support of numerous craftsmen. Mercury reports that the memorial was designed in close coordination with Laura Dahlmeier's family. Mayor Elisabeth Koch (CSU) emphasizes how important the quick implementation and cooperation with the relatives were. Dahlmeier's sporting successes were celebrated in the spa gardens, making the location an ideal choice for this memorial.
But Laura Dahlmeier's fate leaves not only sadness, but also a certain uncertainty. How BR reports, it is currently unclear whether a public memorial service for the deceased athlete will take place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Mayor Koch emphasizes the need to give the family time and space. Dahlmeier, who died in an accident in the Karakoram Mountains in Pakistan due to falling rocks, had written instructions that she wanted to stay on the mountain if anything happened to her. Her relatives are in contact with the responsible authorities and are examining legal options for a possible later recovery of her body.
Her 32nd birthday party would have been on August 22nd, a date now associated with bittersweet memories.
Plans for a permanent memorial
Although the memorial in the spa park is currently only temporary, there are already plans for a permanent solution. At the September local council meeting, an application to rename the spa park to “Laura-Dahlmeier-Park” will be submitted. The former spa park site is currently unnamed, making this change relatively easy to implement. There are also plans to build a monument with a sculpture in honor of Laura Dahlmeier to reflect her special connection to the region. During this difficult time, the community of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is showing strength and sticking together to preserve the memory of one of its greatest athletes.
The events surrounding Laura Dahlmeier's tragic death and the opening ceremony of the memorial conjure up an image of sadness and at the same time of hope: hope for appropriate honor and adherence to the values that Dahlmeier stands for. Her legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew her and her many fans.
