Inclusion in focus: Donau-Ries-Werkstätten's day of action inspires!

An action day dedicated entirely to inclusion recently took place in the Donau-Ries workshops in Asbach-Bäumenheim. Thorsten Reitmaier, the branch manager, emphasized the goal of specifically integrating employees into regular companies and thereby offering them new opportunities. What was particularly remarkable was that around 35 employees from various partner companies were able to get to know the workplaces in the workshops that day. This was seen as a great opportunity to experience the world of work in a completely different way. External visitors were enthusiastic about the positive atmosphere and the respectful treatment among employees. Insights into various work areas, from assembly to picking work for supermarkets, made the event very varied and informative. The day of action not only served to raise awareness, but also to reduce prejudices against people with disabilities.

The day of action is part of a broader initiative to improve working conditions and social acceptance of people with disabilities. According to bayern.de, new jobs are to be created, for example through the new construction of the Donau-Ries workshops in Wemding. State funding of up to 3.6 million euros is an important component in enabling 100 new jobs for people with disabilities. Bavaria's Minister of Social Affairs Carolina Trautner emphasizes that the creation of jobs for people with disabilities is essential for social cohesion and that the focus is on people, not their impairments.

Improvements and challenges

The current statistics show what the labor market situation actually looks like for people with disabilities: In 2023, there were 7.9 million people in Germany with a recognized severe disability, of whom 3.1 million were able to work. Younger people often have difficulties entering the labor market, while many employment disabilities arise from illnesses over the course of life, according to bpb.de. Participation in working life can be strengthened through barrier-free working environments and government support. Around 300,000 people are currently employed in workshops for disabled people, which often act as a valuable point of contact when jobs are lacking on the general market.

The workshops remain an important element for people with disabilities. Despite the measures and support that have been put in place, they are often still the only way to receive vocational training and suitable employment that is based on individual skills. However, a positive sign in this regard is that companies are increasingly providing incentives to employ people with disabilities. Furthermore, surveys show that 29.8% of companies see new opportunities for employing people with disabilities through digital developments.

In conclusion, it can be said that the day of action in the Donau-Ries workshops not only opened a window into the world of inclusion, but was also a step in the right direction to improve society's treatment of people with disabilities and to give them the place they deserve.
