Preparations for the eagerly awaited 2025 festival season of the historic open-air festival “Trenck der Pandur vor Waldmünchen” are in full swing. How Central Bavarian reported, rehearsals will begin on Friday, June 20th, while the official season opening is scheduled for Saturday, June 21st, 2025. This start of the season will be particularly exciting this year because it doesn't start on Friday - as usual - but on Saturday with a festive event.

Directed by Yvonne Brosch, the piece will be performed at the open-air stage in Waldmünchen, which is hosted by Trenckverein Waldmünchen is organized. The play takes place in 1742 and deals with the turmoil of the War of the Austrian Succession, which meant a time of misery for many parts of Bavaria. The rehearsals and the process

The rehearsals on the first two days are already packed with a full program that challenges everyone involved. On Friday, among other things, scenes of the people and costumed protagonists such as Trenck, Kathi and Mariuzza are planned. Much emphasis is placed on the representation of the “people”, which underlines the main theme of the festival. On Saturday, the opening day, various scene rehearsals will take place, including dramatic moments such as the handing out of weapons and the well-known dice scene, in which all pandurs and sutlers will be seen with full props.

An interesting detail: All players are required to sign the attendance list at every rehearsal. The actors with speaking roles in particular have to master their texts so that work on the scenes runs smoothly and the audience can be well entertained.

Historical context and meaning

The plot of the festival is strongly embedded in the historical context War of the Austrian Succession embedded, which lasted from 1741 to 1748 and cost countless lives. After the death of Emperor Joseph I and the accession of his daughter Maria Theresa, Karl Albrecht von Wittelsbach declared war against her in order to win the crown himself. Supported by various European governments, Bavaria found itself in the midst of power struggles that had far-reaching consequences for the population.

The production will be characterized by large-scale folk scenes, the game around campfires and the storming of the city. Not only is the fate of the charismatic Pandour leader Francis von der Trenck told, but the suffering and hopes of the people living at the time are also brought to life.
