Cargo smashes rear window: braking maneuver causes excitement in Cham!
On Wednesday afternoon, shortly after 12.30 p.m., an accident occurred in Cham ZG, which clearly shows how important it is to secure your load correctly. An inadequately secured load on a property transport trailer caused the rear window of a car to be shattered. This unfortunate event happened at the Lindencham motorway exit when a 56-year-old driver had to brake abruptly.
As the Nah reported that the load, which was not adequately secured, slipped and caused significant damage to the rear of the vehicle. Fortunately, everyone involved was uninjured. According to the initial investigations by the Zug police, the trailer securing device was also not correctly attached to the towing vehicle. The driver now has to answer to the public prosecutor's office in the canton of Zug and will be reported.
What can we learn from this incident? The police emphasize that insufficiently secured loads pose a major risk. Loads can slip or even fall, especially during sudden braking or evasive maneuvers. It is therefore crucial for drivers and entrepreneurs to use suitable aids such as lashing straps, nets or anti-slip mats and to check their condition regularly.
Importance of securing loads
For many companies and especially for the members of the BGHM, securing loads plays an essential role. As in an article on BGHM described, there are numerous legal regulations as well as technical rules for properly securing loads. DGUV regulation 70 “Vehicles” is the primary legal basis in the area of occupational safety. Paragraph 37 of this regulation requires that cargo be stowed in such a way that it does not pose a danger to persons under normal traffic conditions.
The Road Traffic Act (StVO) supplements this and requires in paragraph 22 that the load does not slip, tip over or fall during emergency braking or sudden evasive movements. Violations of these regulations can not only lead to high fines, but in an emergency they can also lead to serious traffic accidents.
A global problem
Inadequate load securing can endanger safety, and not just at home. According to the VDI In 2022, over 2,300 traffic accidents in Germany were attributed to inadequate load securing. These incidents often result in serious injuries and cause immense property damage, estimated at up to 3 billion euros annually worldwide.
Compliance with recognized technical rules, especially those of the VDI guidelines, is crucial in order to meet legal requirements and avoid personal injury and economic losses. Proper load securing requires suitable vehicles, enough attachment points and sufficient strength to be safe on the road.
This incident from Cham ZG once again shows how important it is to take the responsibility for securing loads seriously. After all, proper safety can protect not only your own life, but also that of other road users.
