Augsburg's first fire-fighting robot: revolutionizing safety on rails!

The news from Augsburg is making waves! Today, November 12, 2025, the first fire-fighting robot on rails was presented - a technological marvel that is used in the event of accidents and fires in the tram tunnels. The “RTE Robot” is not only equipped with cameras and water cannons, but can also transport heavy equipment and provide important situation information. This makes it possible to carry out operations under the most difficult conditions without putting the emergency services at risk. This innovation is real progress for the safety of Augsburg's citizens and emergency services Augsburg.de reported.

Mayor Eva Weber highlights the city's inventiveness and innovative strength and emphasizes that the robot is a symbol of technical development. Jürgen Fergg, spokesman for Stadtwerke Augsburg (swa), speaks of the increased safety for passengers and road users that can be achieved through these measures. Fire Councilor Albert Kreutmayr adds that the RTE Robot significantly increases the efficiency of operations. “That’s a good touch that’s being shown here!” says Kreutmayr.

Flexible use of the RTE Robot

The RTE Robot can be used not only on the rails, but also off-road and even under water. “A real all-rounder,” is how the swa spokesman sees it. It will be used for the first time in the tram tunnel under Augsburg Central Station, which is approximately 600 meters long. However, a little patience is required: the installation of electrical systems in the tunnel and at the stop is currently underway and should be completed by the end of 2026 or mid-2027 at the latest.

Work on connecting to the existing track on line 6 will also begin next year. The “Augsburg Central Station mobility hub” is scheduled to be fully commissioned at the end of 2027. With these developments, Augsburg shows once again that the city is at the forefront of technological advances and is committed to the safety and well-being of its citizens, while at the same time relying on innovative solutions.

A look at the future of our city that looks promising! An example can be the collaboration with TATA Consultancy Services, which plays a role in the technical support of such projects - this is also reflected in the modern approach to urban challenges. It's clear that Augsburg is committed to doing pioneering work, and the RTE Robot is another step in this direction.
