Cyclists and pedestrians in Amberg: dispute sparked over new rules!

In Amberg, where discussions about urban development are lively, the city held its annual citizens' meeting on Thursday evening. How mittelbayerische.de reported, however, the interest of citizens was rather low - only three applications found their way to the administration. But these few topics caused lively discussions among those present.

Mayor Michael Cerny (CSU) informed the citizens about the advancing digitalization in the city. 62 percent of all processes in Amberg have now been digitized. A survey showed that more than half of citizens would like faster digital administration, while many still value analogue official business. Amberg is particularly showing a pioneering role in schools: over 400 “digital classrooms” and more than 5,000 iPads have already been issued to students. In fact, 95 percent of parents rate the digital equipment positively.

Digital future and new applications

Josef Singer, Head of Central Services, also reported on the advantages of electronic files, which have already saved 500,000 sheets of paper. From the perspective of digitalization, Nadine Piehler from Amberg Stadtwerke presented the use of LORAWAN sensors, which monitor soil moisture and climate data, among other things. A new citizens' office is scheduled to open in January right next to the town hall, which will make it easier for citizens to access services.

Things got particularly exciting with the applications. While Thomas Andreschko's application, which criticized the lack of playgrounds and the inadequate public transport connection on Laßlebenstrasse, was met with a lot of discussion, Daniel Holzapfel's application to plan spatial opportunities for clubs, art and culture on the site of the former Leopold barracks received positive feedback. Building officer Markus Kühne confirmed that a corresponding building was being planned. Stephan Luber, on the other hand, complained about the disregard of speed limits by cyclists and e-scooter drivers in the pedestrian zone.

Here Mayor Cerny announced that a ban on cycling in the pedestrian zone could be considered due to such violations. Legal officer Bernhard Mitko added that the city will continue to monitor the situation.

Joining forces on digitalization

Similar discussions about digitalization also look at other social issues. The energy consumption of Bitcoin is becoming more and more in focus. How coinmarketcap.com As explained, every Bitcoin transaction contributes to significant energy consumption, which is increasingly viewed critically in the public debate. Questions about ecological sustainability and the effects on the climate are perhaps becoming increasingly relevant in Amberg.

One thing is clear: While Amberg is on the digital fast lane, old and new challenges are coming to the city. The next few months will show how these developments can be further advanced and which solutions will ultimately be beneficial for all citizens.
