Christian highlight: Pilgrims flock to the Kreuzberg Festival in Schmidmühlen!

At the Trinity Festival, which was celebrated this year on June 15th, numerous believers gathered on the Kreuzberg near Schmidmühlen to celebrate the traditional festival. Many Schmidmühlen residents who live abroad returned to their old home to celebrate together and maintain spiritual exchange. The festival is celebrated a week after Pentecost and has a long tradition in the Catholic Church, dating back to the 9th century, when it was first celebrated in Benedictine monasteries, as Vivat reports.

Pastor Norbert Große and Father Meinolf von Spee from the Salesians from Ensdorf led the festive service at the grotto. Pastor Große welcomed the pilgrims, especially the visitors from Hohenfels and Adertshausen, as well as guests from near and far. In his sermon, Father Meinolf explained the important aspects of the Trinity: God the Father as Creator, Jesus Christ as man and the Holy Spirit as helper among men. “The Trinity reminds us that God works among us in many facets,” he said and closed the service with the impressive song “Great God, we praise you,” which invited the visitors to sing along.

Cultural celebrations and culinary delights

After the service, the St. Ägidius brass band created a festive atmosphere with a concert. The visitors enjoyed the “mountain measure” and the freshly grilled bratwursts offered by the Kirwagemeinschaft Schmidmühlen. In the bright sunshine, the atmosphere was just as serene as the nature around the Kreuzberg, from where the pilgrims could take a wonderful view of the Vils and Lauterachtal valleys as well as their home in the military training area.

The feast of the Holy Trinity symbolizes the unity of God in the three persons Father, Son and Holy Spirit and is mainly celebrated in Western church services, as ferientags.info explains. Officially introduced in 1334, the custom has survived to this day in many Catholic regions, where it is often celebrated with processions and solemn masses. Even though Trinity Sunday is not a public holiday in Germany, believers enjoy the tradition and the festivities associated with it.
