Lack of young talent in the metal trade: call for active participation!

The autumn meeting of the Altötting-Mühldorf metal guild took place in the picturesque town of Traunstein, at the invitation of the company J.N. Kreiller KG was organized. At the meeting, the guild members were not only able to visit the company's own “Steel Center”, but also shed light on burning topics in the metal craft.

Senior Master Anton Hudlberger opened the meeting and welcomed numerous guests, including Armin Riedel from the Mühldorf Education Center and Thorsten Kögler, the headmaster of the I Mühldorf Vocational School. A central topic was the alarming decline in training numbers in the metal trade, which was viewed with concern by those present. The number of metal workers fell from 191 trainees in 2005 to just 140 in 2015, while precision mechanics fell from 56 to 55 trainees. Currently only 96 metal workers and 6 precision mechanics are being trained at vocational school I in Mühldorf, which sets off alarm bells.

The challenge of the lack of young talent

Josef Fliegl pointed out the immense importance of middle school graduates for loyalty to companies. His colleague Nikolaus Binder called for more intensive advertising for dual training in order to increase the attractiveness of these paths. Marco Traubinger's tips were also discussed, who advised companies to train young specialists themselves and retain them in the long term. “We have to invest in young talent,” was the tenor of the group.

Another highlight of the evening was the reference to the upcoming “Crafts Information Day in November”. Under the motto “Future in the skilled trades – shape your career,” those involved hope for a greater response and targeted provision of information about career opportunities in the skilled trades. With 82 members, the Altötting-Mühldorf metal guild is already one of the five largest guilds in Bavaria, but it knows that it has to do more to get young people excited about the craft.
