Bishop Oster thrilled: Thanksgiving service in Altötting successful!

From January 16th to 18th, 2026, the Bishop of Passau, Stefan Oster SDB, was on tour in the parishes of Altötting, Altötting-Süd and Unterzholzhausen. During this time, numerous intensive discussions took place with full-time and volunteer staff, which brought the bishop and the congregation together. The highlight of the visitation was the thanksgiving service in the St. Josef Church in Altötting Süd, which was given a celebratory setting with a musical performance by the St. Josef vocal ensemble and Joseph Rheinberger's “Missa in G”.

“I am grateful for the encounters I was able to experience here,” said Oster, who used the opportunity to reconcile the challenges of everyday parish life with the many pilgrims and visitors. In his sermon he pointed out that the parishes in Altötting not only enjoy a special challenge, but also a privilege. The bishop said that the joy of God's presence and the building of genuine relationships with God and fellow human beings should not be lost sight of.

The youth foot pilgrimage as a sign of hope

Preparations for the pilgrimage are already in full swing and there is great joy among the participants and organizers. This shows once again how important it is to maintain spiritual traditions in the popular pilgrimage site of Altötting. The committed full-time and volunteer workers who supported the parishes during the visitation are also in demand here to make the event an unforgettable experience for everyone.

With these events, the Diocese of Passau impressively shows how faith, community and support work together to take pilgrims and visitors on a journey of hope and joy. We can therefore look forward to seeing how events in the Waldburger Land will develop and what the parishes are planning for their communities in the coming months.
