Successful exchange day: 165 driving licenses were exchanged in a flash!

The driving license office in the Aichach-Friedberg district had a complete success on the last exchange day on September 26, 2025. A total of 165 applications were submitted that day and processed quickly and professionally by the employees. A large rush of visitors began as early as 7:30 a.m. and continued until the morning. Thanks to a well-coordinated team, long waiting times were avoided, which was extremely well received by the citizens. The feedback was consistently positive and confirmed the high quality of service provided by the position.

In the afternoon the crowds finally subsided and the exchange day was completed smoothly. In view of the success, the driving license office will now check whether another exchange day can be carried out. Driver's licenses can currently also be exchanged during regular opening hours by appointment.

Driving license exchange until 2033

As bundesregierung.de explains, all driving licenses that were issued before January 19, 2013 must be exchanged for the new EU driving license by January 19, 2033. This exchange serves the aim of establishing a uniform and forgery-proof driving license design in the EU. In addition, staggered deadlines apply for exchanges, depending on the issue date. Driver's licenses issued before 1953 must also be exchanged by this date.

• 1971 oder später: Umtausch bis 19. Januar 2025

The exchange itself is purely an administrative matter; a new driving test is not required. Finally, the same deadlines and conditions also apply to motorcycle licenses. Don't get into a time crunch! It is advisable to book an appointment early with the driving license authority of your current place of residence.

The following documents are required for the exchange: a valid ID card or passport, a biometric passport photo, the current driver's license and a fee of around 25 euros. Important to know: For driving licenses not issued by the current authority, an index card copy may also be required. The new EU driving license is invalid after 15 years and must then be renewed.

Failure to exchange is considered an administrative offense and can be punished with a fine of ten euros, although the federal states can waive the fine. With this in mind: In order not to get into a mess, all driving license holders should exchange their licenses in a timely manner.
